GAPA Theatre Spring 2024 Writing Workshops

Call for Queer and Transgender Asian and Pacific Islander (QTAPI) Storytellers!

Join the GAPA Theatre Collective Spring 2024 Writing Workshop Sessions!

We will be developing stories for the upcoming GAPA Theatre + GAPA Men’s Chorus production in June 2024. While not limited to this theme, we are looking for stories rooted in our lived experiences based on the theme of “be(long)ing here

Reflecting on where we have been, where we are now, and what our collective future holds while acknowledging the facets of our many identities as Queer and Transgender Asian and Pacific Islanders, including as immigrants, refugees and mixed-race descendants.

Everyone has a story to tell and those stories matter.

FAQs

Who can participate?
The workshop sessions are open to any Queer and Transgender Asian and Pacific Islander (QTAPI) individual in the San Francisco Bay Area who is interested in telling their story in writing and/or performance.

What sort of experience do I need to have?
No experience is necessary. The collective is made up of individuals with varying experience levels- to people who have an interest in writing, to people who just journal for their own enjoyment, to people who have written pieces (poetry, spoken word, solo performance pieces and short plays) for past GAPA Theatre productions. We just ask you to come into the sessions with an open mind and willingness to share a story(s) rooted in your lived experience as a QTAPI person.

What sort of support can I expect as an inexperienced, somewhat experienced or experienced writer?
The writing sessions will be informally facilitated to include a mixture of writing prompts, exercises and feedback sessions.

Do I need to write specifically for the upcoming June 2024 production?
No. While we’d like everyone to focus on the same theme and participants are encouraged to submit their work for the June 2024 production, you are welcome to participate at your own pace with your own goals and objectives. Our practice is to provide a creative and safe space for QTAPIs interested in storytelling.

Where will the writing workshop sessions take place?
The sessions will take place over Zoom with possibly 1-2 sessions to take place in person, if space is available.
